We started in Northglenn, rode north to Brighton, then west over

to 168th and i25. There were 6 of us, average speed 16-20 mph.

38 miles total.  3000 calories burned. 6 new bike friends made.

I am constantly amazed at the courteous drivers here in Colorado.

They move over for bikers not a honk or a yell yet.

about half of those 38 miles were on Multi-use paths, awesome.

The bike is coming along, it now has wheels.  I ordered some wheels from a local bike shop owner a month ago and got frustrated that they had not arrived yet, so yesterday I ordered a set of Weinmann track wheels from JensonUSA dot com.  The wheelset was on sale for 109 dollars, and with shipping and tax it came up to 136 dollars.  I paid for 4 day shipping and the wheels were at my house 23 hours later!  FedEx decided to move them fast for whatever reason.  With a 18 tooth freewheel, rim tape and chain from Herb Bauer, a set of Soma Everwear tires from Chris at Tower Velo, and puncture-resistant tubes from Performance Bike’s going-out-of-buisness sale, the Motobecane is ready to roll.  No brakes yet, however.  There is still a lot more to do, but here’s what it looks like now:

I’m up to 282 dollars total on the whole thing so far, including paint, the new stuff and buying the bike in the first place.

The red stripe on the wheels matches the paint color somewhat, it’s not perfect but not too far off.  Red stripe wheels like the indy cars are using this year yeee haw.

I still have to get the seat recovered or get a new seat, buff the paint off the lugs more thoroughly, put on a clear coat, add some brakes or buy a fixed sprocket, paint the center of the crank arms and the chain gaurd, and put on some bar tape.

Here’s some pictures of the frame with new paint, but still not clear coated.  The paint job is not very good but the coverage is good and the color is consistent.  I’m hoping that a coat of clear gloss will make it look good without any more work.

The unpainted lugs look awesome, I hope they stay shiny with a clearcoat over the bare metal, and the clear doesn’t get cloudy or flake off.  I will have to see.  Another idea that was suggested is to do primer, paint them with silver paint and then add the clearcoat, which would ensure that nothing funny happens.

Here it is with the crankset on, a seat from an old mountain bike, and with wheels from my road bike.  These wheels have to stay on my other bike, I’m hoping to get a set of deep-v wheels soon.

mmm Euro bike racing at work……

I’m working on the frame for my next project, it’s a Motobecane 57cm from the 70s that I bought for 40 bucks a while ago.  The frame was stripped down and sandblasted, and the paint is on!  I am doing dark red paint with polished metal lugs and a clear coat over the whole thing.  Hopefully it will look like a chrome-lugged frame but cost much less.  I am planning to get some Deep-V track wheels.  Pictures coming soon!
