How long have you been a bike commuter?
Off and on for about 15 years. I’ve commuted exclusively by bike since May 1, 2007. I also run 90% of my sub-4 mile errands by bike.

Why did you start riding your bike to work and how long is your commute?
My commute is about 17 and half miles, round-trip. I started riding because I’m just sick of driving in traffic…or out of traffic, for that matter. I’m also tired of being part of a society which prizes driving so much that it will send it’s children thousands of miles to die in an attempt to protect that driving habit.

How does Bike Commuting help you with your weekend club rides?
I’m no club rider, but I do notice I have more power on the mountain bike.

What do you do for a living and in what city do you bike commute?
I work for the Colorado Dept. Of Transportation, testing soil. I commute in Denver.

What kind of bikes do you have?
Oh, man…let’s see: a 48″ highwheeler,

a KHS 69er soft-tail mountain bike,

1974 Peugeot UO8 fixed gear,

1988 Rockhopper fixed gear mtb with 700c wheels and a centerpull brake,

,

2001 Gary Fisher painted by the TREK racing department with Paula Pezzo’s pink paint,

Raleigh Sprint 27 (The Clubman),

1987 Raleigh Tourer with 650B wheels,

a 20″-wheeled Formula One bike converted to fixed gear,

a TREK OCLV soft-tail mountain bike,

1988 Jamis Diablo fixed gear mountain bike (the Miami Vice bike),

RedLine cyclocross bike,

1997 LeMond Zurich fixed gear,

1971 Western Flyer cruiser (which I got new for my 10th birthday)1965 Sears Spacelander cruiser,

late 80s 24″ fully-chromed Raleigh BMX cruiser,

circa 1910 Iver Johnson “bridge-truss” fixed gear

Lots of fixies and mtbs, I guess.

Any funny or interesting commuting story that you may want to share?
I’m constantly amazed by the number of foxes I see in the predawn hours, riding through some high-falutin’ neighborhoods on the way to work.

What do people (coworkers, friends) say when you tell them that you are a bike commuter?
Anything from “I wish I could do that, but..” to “You’re crazy.” Crazy like a fox! (see above)

Bicycling advocacy? Are you active in any local or regional advocacy groups?
I pay my dues, but don’t attend any meetings. No excuses, just lazy.

Thanks Jon,
You can check out Jon’s misadventures in snow, sun, dirt and the rocky mountains here at his commuter/bike blog.

I had to throw this shot in too. Jon commuted throughout the winter in the snow!
