Summer is here. Drink lots of water and if you plan to do any long rides over 10 miles freeze a bottle of water overnight before you go. A frozen bottle of water will melt in about 30 minutes out in the sun/heat and become warm water.
When I plan to ride in this terrible heat I freeze an insulated bike water bottle like these. They last 1-2 hours without melting all the way and they stay cold:

Stay hydrated and drink lots of water in between your rides.
A lack of proper hydration is the number one way to hurt
yourself this summer.

It feels good to be back in the saddle.
Don’t stop pedaling.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI use the same exact bottle (2 x 20 Oz.). They are great for shorter rides … but I had to break down and buy a Camelbak last week after running dry on the trail after 1 hour.
Now I use the bottles for Gatorade.
Man you must drink a lot
I was on SJ river gorge trail on Sunday and drank more than 100 oz. … actually ran out before getting back to the trailhead.
I sweat a lot… but hey dude .. this is Fresno … also known as HOT AS HELL.
That is true I will give you that HOT AS HELL.
I too have those same bottles on my short 1 1/2 hour ride yesterday I went through an entire bottle.
I generally only ride in short, half-hour hops. So dehydration doesn’t really factor. But the windblown dust is killing me. I’m just not used to dry weather and honestly, I’ve begun seriously considering drastic measures. Like wearing goggles.
Kase, Whenever I ride north of woodward park I try to take my sunglasses with me. The dust is terrible.
When there’s large amounts of dust in the air, I just ride with my eye closed. It works well.
One eyed Isaac.
I have a pair of goggles I bought at the National Atomic Museum. They were made for the Department Of Energy to protect the eyes of nuclear test observers. When atmo testing was banned, they were packed away for future use in case the ban was lifted. It wasn’t and the museum snapped them up by the case and put them on sale for $15 a pop. So a bought a pair.
When you’re wearing them, a bright summer day looks like a moonlit night. It’s quite nice, actually. Wearing them while riding might be suicide, though.
