So I rode my bike to work today.. Duh.
I also scheduled a doctors appointment for myself today at 11:00 am.
I rode to the doctors office which is about 3 miles south of my office down Palm Avenue.
Let me say that for all the people who commute down Palm avenue, my hat is off to you.
Palm is so busy at all times and the cars are going so fast I was shocked. I have ridden down Palm before but never during the lunch hour. WOW
The doctors office had no place to lock my bike so I parked it inside. He commented that “It should have come with a chain guard” I said “Its a racing bike with a rack, and besides I wear shorts” He said ” shorts are for children”
What a jerk, I never liked him anyway. ![]()

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI hardly ever feel safe on the road in Fresno… even bike lanes provide little reprieve from the 4 wheeled maniacs.
@ThePaul - I agree and it is always on my mind when I ride anywhere. However, when I went for a ride outside of Santa Maria (on part of the Solvang Century ride) drivers gave me tons of room and seemed to not want to hurt me. It was amazing. Much different than Fresno’s drivers where I have to watch out for ignorance and/or malice.
What the hell, “shorts are for kids”. He obviously has never tried to get chain grease out of jeans.
People in Solvang and the surrounding areas actually think bikes are a good idea. Crazy I know. Plus they have some of the biggest and best cycling events there.
My commute is down chestnut (to Fresno State) … I end up riding in fields when possible just to avoid traffic … I’m on a mountain bike…
I would rather deal with endless flats caused by goat-heads than Fresno traffic. .. this is no lie.. my bike is sitting on a flat right now from this morning that I will have to fix before heading home.
Mr. Tuffys are your friend. They are the prophylactic of cycling. They seriously are magical. Cheap too. Tri-sport has them for $12
Tire Liners
Oh believe me Zakdude, I know! I am running brown Mr Tuffys already .. they protected me from 8 or 9 of those pokey bastards, but one got through.
I went to a shop nearby and picked up some slime on my lunch break. I loaded both tires up with the goo and pumped them up. The one with the flat deflated again…. so it looks like I will be changing that rear tube before heading home anyhow.
No biggie … burn a few extra calories cranking that hand pump.
To your dr’s credit, some of the shorts that cyclists wear look like they are made for children. I am assuming you were wearing your business shorts right;)
Dude I think your doctor should praise you for ridding your bike and improving your health, and not chastise you for wearing shorts. Shorts are awesome, especially if you have the legs for them.
Shorts are awesome indeed.
My doctor is a really old guy like 85 who I think is starting to lose it.
